Well that was a bit of a game. I expected Sion to be tough opposition and that proved to be the case. However we were no way near our best.
Once again in a Euro tie we seem to loose possession to cheaply. What annoyed me most was that this team had no fear of us whatsoever which is a sadly indicative of how far we have slipped down the Euro table.
Of course we had key players missing. Kayal would have made such a difference last night anchoring the midfield and getting in amongst them when they had the ball
Up fron we were poor especially in the first half with Stoke playing out wide. He and Samaras were simply too far apart to form any useful partnership. Commons was also poor wasting possession and drifting into the centre of the pitch too much which basically cut down our wide options.
Maloney and Forrest made a difference in the second half but we lacked imagination in the final 3rd. On a few occasions I found my self staring at the directors box and thinking surely you can see what we are missing here. It’s time for them to back the manager.
I don’t like criticising Lenny but really we should have played our own 4-4-2 game and forced the opposition to deal with our game. I certainly hope he does that in the return game.
As for the referee well he was simply shocking. His positional sense was shocking and some of his decisions were baffling to day the least.
I felt Joe Ledley and Ki done as much as they could but ultimately the team underperformed. I’m hoping for a better performance in the return leg but given our away form over the past few years I doubt it will be. The only upside from last night was that we did not concede a goal and I met Bertie Auld.
