Celtic face a talented Stade Rennais side in their third Europa league game tonight. Celtic are currently propping up group I on goal difference -2 to Stade Rennais – 1 with both clubs sitting on 1 point. For Celtic to really give ourselves a chance of qualification we need to do something we have not done in a long time. Win away from home.
Stade Rennais are currently sitting fifth in Ligue 1 in France just five points off the leaders PSG so they must be a decent side. However that should not concern us all we can do is concentrate on what we do.
With Gary Hooper, Georgios Samaras and Kris Commons left home in Glasgow due to injury it seems that Celtic are three top players down. However if we go on form only Hooper will really be missed. So once again we need to ponder on what system Lennon will deploy. The positive thing about Samaras being out is that it may force Lennons hand to stick with our lopsided 4-4-2 system with Stokes and Bangura up front.
I’d also like to see Victor Wanyama get a start if he can be accommodated as he had a great game against Udinese and Kilmarnock at the weekend.
I’m delighted to see that Lennon has included Marcus Fraser, Patrik Twardzik, Callum McGregor, Paul George and Joe Chalmers from the Under 19’s in the squad. They may not feature but it won’t do them any harm either. After their performance against Man City U19’s it’s only fair that some of these young guys get a taste of the first team in Europe.
No predictions because I gave up predicting Celtic games in Europe a long time ago but I’ll have my fingers crossed for at least a professional performance.
