Songs.Celtic fans must decide which are appropriate.

In August of this year, we ran two polls. Poll one was a simple question. Should fans sing IRA songs at the game? Poll two a more in depth question. From a list of 10 songs which ones were acceptable to be sung at Celtic games. For poll 2 everyone was allowed to vote for up to ten songs.
You can see the results here. http://wp.me/p1ICse-1A
The main reason behind these polls was to start a debate within the Celtic support over what we feel as a support are appropriate or inappropriate songs. After Strathclyde Polices latest “intervention”, it is more important than ever that we have this debate and make our own decisions.
We should not wait until we are told what is appropriate by the Government, Police or UEFA. We need to be smarter than the average bear and sort this out ourselves and soon.
We have to look at songs which express the clubs Irish heritage but do not help others (media,Police etc) drag the clubs name through the mud.
The fields of Athenry, Let the people sing, This land is your land, Celtic Symphony (without ooh ah up the ra), A Soldiers Song and The Lonesome Boatman are perfectly decent songs that do not contain any sectarian, racist or offensive lines. These songs are songs worth defending and keeping if the majority agree.
My personal opinion is that we have more than enough Celtic songs to sing but I can live with the above songs if that is the compromise WE reach between ourselves.
Celtic FC are a club open to all but it should be remembered that we are also a Scottish club with a proud Irish heritage therefore it is important that we allowed to celebrate our history free from oppression.
I hope this blog provokes a discussion and that every Celtic fan who wants to leaves a comment leaves one or debate it on their own forums.
We will not censor any replies as long as there is no personal abuse towards fellow supporters.
We are running out of time to sort this out ourselves so please get involved. We should be dictating the course of this debate and not allowing outsiders to impose their tainted solutions.
Hail, Hail

  1. For me this is not open for debate the singing pro IRA/RA songs has to stop for the good of our club. We are getting Celtic’s and us the fans good name dragged through the mud and the sad thing each and everyone of us knew this was always going to happen. Fans can post whatever they like and blame whoever they like the fact is these songs are offensive to a lot of people/football fans including our own support. 70% of our own fans voted against these songs so for those of you who clam to making a stand listen to our own support before we are sitting in clubs and bars watching our team because we have been banned from going to Celtic Park and that is a fact look across to the south side I for one do not want to be classed a bigot like that scum

    1. 30% voted the other way, does your logic mean their votes are irrevevant. As I said earlier get a backbone and stand up to censorship and oppression, for that is what you are agreeing to if you try and ban people singing about Politics and cultural identity.

      1. Can I ask a genuine question Eddie? If the IRA chants persist and the club get fined by UEFA on several occasions are you comfortable with that ?

        1. So for the sake of a football club you would have me censored and criminalised for doing what is the right of billions of right minded individuals the world over. We are fortunate to live in a democracy, Wake up and smell the coffee James this is anti Irish racism dressed up with a new suit and tie. Why no mention of other teams fans singing Derry’s Walls, The Sash etc, if this was a universal call to all fans of every persuasion to desist from singing any songs that may offend then yes you might have a point but I still woundn’t support you. I happen to beleive we have ample legislation in this country to tackle racism and sectarianism and all we need is a police force and judiciary to enfore these laws. For those that oppose our songs/culture let the goverment tackle it not by criminalising the victim but educating the intolerant and defending our right, set out in the Geneva convention, to celebrate our cultural and political identity. Why are so many Celtic fans cowards when it comes to taking on the establishment? I happen to think Margret Thatcher is a cow, she many conservatives would be offended at that, I stood at Hampden once and along with thousands of other Celtic fans spat vitriolic bile at her, not once did I or the thousands that offended her and cronies think for one minuit we would be criminalised for doing this. Why do you want to redefined the terms racism/sectarianism?

          1. So Eddie for your right to express yourself you are willing to destroy everyone elses football club?
Spare me the lectures on rights and freedoms, have you not heard freedoms collide. You can sing your songs and wave your banners anywhere else I can only watch my team in one stadium.

          2. Are .you all so thick as to not get it yet? This has hee haw to do with singing songs with references to the IRA, it’s about an attack on a culture. You can become uncle toms or sudetan celts all you want, me I’ll sing about the international brigade if I like. Oh wait a min that’s not offensive here, only in Spain. So let me get this right, no songs about IRA or references to the IRA. What about No Time for Love, a song that I’ve heard is about internment, is this ok, wait a min some of those interred were convicted of being members of the IRA.
You appeasers need to take a good hard look at yourselves, I’ve been on many a demonstration in my day to defend the rights that took us generations to win and you would give it away cause some bigot in Govan says he’s offended, get F@@@ing real.

  3. http://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/spl/spl_launch_probe_into_pro_ira_chanting_at_celtic_park_1_1966464
This article in the Scotsman is the reason I am against censorship, Celtic fans are not breaking any rules by singing these songs at Celtic Park yet the spl are investigating our fans for singing songs that can be bought in any high street record store, songs sung all over the world by international recording stars without 1 person taking offence, yet in this country you would appease our accusers, lie down to intimidation and endorse censorship. Get a backbone and stand up for what’s right. You give in now you will be railroaded to hell; they will be unremitting in their pursuit of the Celtic support and will never stop till not one song with any reference to another culture is banished, while they will continue to sing their triumphalist anthems with impunity.

  5. Colm 70% of our fans did not vote against them, 70% of fans who took part in the poll did.
    Theres a massive difference

    1. That’s a valid point VJ. In an ideal world other Celtic fan sites would have run similar polls which we could have aggregated to give a more accurate measure. Unfortunately that never happened.
I think given the amount of people who did vote it gives a basic snapshot of how people feel about this.
      Hail, Hail

    2. VJ Fair point it was 70% of those that voted but does that tell you something. Would you not agree the majority of fans and the club want this singing to stop. I feel that this is only the beginning after reading that SPL are now looking into the Hibs game. I hope this guy is listening at Celtic Park 28 Dec as he seems to have selective hearing when it comes to Rangers fans

  7. Colm the question is, what is a Pro IRA song – because none of the songs listed really contain anything that offensive. The Libyan people recently behaved in the same way as the original IRA. Why is it wrong to sing of their deeds?
I enjoy the atmosphere when there is plenty of singing. There is no incitment to hatred, discrimination, revolution or anything else. How can they legislate to remove history – the songs they sing are about events that happened – the shame should be on those who refuse to recognise what really happened on both sides. Let the People Sing.
The same people that are offended by traditional Irish songs must be the same ones who are offended by Christmas Carols or Easter – lets just make the world one big bland colour – lets forget about the differences that make the two clubs unique to support and just have Glasgow United.
celtic – established in Glasgow for the Irish – what we are and our identity is clear in our history. If the link to Ireland and its history were not clear then it would have died out years ago – but it is strong and if we allow the politicians to change history on this small matter then were do you stop them. WE DO NOT LIVE IN A POLICE STATE.

    1. Dave, I lived through the 30 years of conflict I have had family and friends murder by loyalist death squads, I know men that served time for their part in the conflict. When I go to watch Celtic I go to watch football I know my Irish history I know what happened over the years if I want to listen to IRA songs I can do so and have done so but Celtic Park is not the place. I have just watched Ireland qualify for euro championships next year 51,000 fans singing and supporting their country in Dublin, a lot of them wearing Celtic tops and not one pro IRA song song the whole night surely that says it all

  9. Congrats to ROI for making the Euros \o/. Noticeable that the Irish football supporters did not sing one IRA song. Which begs the question. Why do a section of our support feel they have to ?

  11. Can I just point out, I don’t personnally think we need these songs at Celtic Park, we have a vast catalogue of other songs. Some of them are political in their content and as such would also at some stage in the future be challenged. It would be censorship by creep, a bit at a time.
Most of the Celtic fans in Scotland read the papers(thank god for the internet) and can’t help but be influenced by them, if you hear something enough times you will beleive it to be true.
We the Celtic support are under attack, the Green Brigade is the focus of that attack at the moment, when they have dealt with the GB they will come after the rest of us. A 17yr old was arrested recently and remanded in prison for singing the Celtic symphoney. We all know what part was deemed offensive but I’d challenge anyone to say this song in, anyway endorses the singers support for the IRA, those that think it’s does need to revist the words and the context of those words. You will kill off our club by stripping it of it’s very values that make us what we are.
I appologise to the previous posters for my earlier comments they were out of order and uncalled for.

    1. It’s cool Eddie. This site supports the Green Brigade and will continue to do so (even more now). However I think it’s only healthy that we have a debate amongst ourselves with out the interference of those outside the Celtic family. It’s good that we all have different views and that we can discuss them.
I’ll make this promise that this site will never try and tell people what and what not to sing, think or believe. That is the true essence of the Celtic Support.

  13. Lets clarify something here and now, a crowd of drunken supposed football fans singing their support for the IRA are not in the same league as Nelson Mandela or Martin Luther King.
I have no doubt that a large number of Celtic fans have a sympathy for what the republicans have achieved and wish to achieve, myself included. You do not have exclusive rights to persecution, my problem with you is you insist my football club be a vehicle for your beliefs, you show me a film of celtic park singing to a man to an IRA song the way they do to a true Celtic song and I will concede the point and say I am not true Celt, otherwise you smarten up or take the nonesense elsewhere.

    1. bm, while I clearly get the point your making, what would be wrong with several thousand sober Celtic fans singing BOTOB on St Paddys day at Celtic Park against scotlands shame?

    2. BM, the point is that Nelson Mandela was a terrorist. People have already re-written history to brush aside the reality. But would singing Free Nelson Mandela be a political song that could see you arrested at a football park?
For me its not about the the glorification of the IRA – as an ex-serviceman I know the reality of that. Its all part of the controlling nature of the political elite. They will slowly but surely destroy football in Scotland. Attendances are already low and if the police are going to video and review then arrest later, then you better be careful about everything you say. The football fan in Scotland will soon have less freedom of expression than an Iranian or Syrian. If my 15 year old daughter can be arrested for singing Go home ya huns – there is something seriously wrong. Just because we don’t riot and they wrap it up in different forms don’t think its anything more than an oppression of the individual. If this was Maggie Thatcher introducing this legislation what would your reaction be?
We must be the only country who has every reported its own supporters to UEFA or FIFA? Do the spanish, italian, turks ever report there fans to UEFA? The police should remove this person and Celtic should refuse him access to Paradise. The fine will do nothing more than remove money from Scottish Football – Shame on him.
