Cup Final – Preview

The first of our ‘biggest match of the season’ series kick’s off against Kilmarnock at Hampden Park on Sunday at 3.00 pm.
Must say I’m confident in getting the first part of a possible treble secured but looking back at last seasons final display I’m not over confident. Last year the other side were there for the taking but we played poorly on the day and got what we deserved for our efforts. Runners up medals so lets not get complacent about Sundays game.
One of the reasons that give me confidence for this cup final is that we have not only improved as a team but we have also matured. With a Scottish cup winners medal in the bag the bhoys now know what it’s like to have that winning feeling and I’m positive that they will want that again and again so Sunday is a great chance for them to do that.
Like Dundee Utd Kilmarnock on their day are a good footballing side but also like Utd they are inconsistent. Now Sunday is a one off game and they have nothing to loose and everything to win, that should ensure a tough game. They have a tactical astute manager in Kenny Shiels who normally likes to play an expansive game. However on Sunday he may opt for a more compact approach hoping to bog us down in forward midfield areas and test the resolve of our team and the support. It’s an old trick normally deployed by most teams in SPL games. However there in lies a danger.
We have players all over the park who are capable of scoring if Kilmarnock adopt that approach and we score first then they have to be more expansive at one point in the game which will open the large Hampden pitch up for our better quality players. So the outcome on Sunday will depend on what we do as a team. If we go about our business in a professional manner then we will win. If not we will struggle like last seasons final.
I have every faith in our manager and our team to perform on the day and lift the cup but as the old saying goes ‘Ain’t over till the fat lady sings’.
Hail, Hail and enjoy your Cup Final day or as Rangers* supporters call it. Sunday. 🙂 /
