Right wing Celtic Fans ?

To me that’s an oxymoron. It doesn’t work on any level. If you are a Celtic supporter you support Celtic. There’s no Left or Right wing you just support Celtic.
In the real world outside football then it’s a fair shout that you will take up a political stance where you are right or left of a political ideology and that’s the way life goes.
However when it comes to football clubs and their support in general you can’t split a support between right and left. It simply does not happen.
A perfect example are the two big Glasgow clubs. Anyone with a brain in their head can recognise that Celtic are traditionally a ‘left wing’ or ‘Socialist’ club because they have preserved the roots of a club born out of charity. On the other hand Rangers are seen as a ‘right wing’  ‘Unionist’ club because they adopted a Protestant ideology in the 1920’s. That’s all fair enough if that’s what people want.
However what you won’t find within these supports are ‘right’ or ‘left’ wing factions who are determined to fight each other for the soul of their club.
Anyone who thinks that Celtic or our support are split along Right or Left wing ideologies really need to have a good look at themselves.
Celtic are a football club open to all. We play football not politics.

  1. James,
Another good post, I was with you all the way until I read the last sentence.
Surely if we are being honest there is a “political” element whenever the Irish topic is brought up… I agree totally however that it is not political along right or left lines, and like our old enemy Celtic support is probably split along Tory,,Labour, Lib Dems and SNP. Like many folk their politics are divided along economic lines…
Now for me I would love for the support to be “Apolitical” and have nothing on their minds but supporting the football team…. Again quite correctly you point to the historic charitable traditions of Celtic, A charity that although (historicly) predominately Catholic was also non denominational in its charitable giving. And today as an instution gives without favour to needy causes..
For me James I am hopeful, that in time as Ireland moves forward and all sides work together for the greater good of the whole community that both Celtic and Rangers fans rivalry is totally about football and nothing about religion and or politics (meaning the Irish question)….
I accept James that according to history I may be seen as a dreamer, but as a Christian man, I can’t get over the fact that for those that believe, it is the same God and Saviour Jesus Christ we worship…….
Why the hate?…… for it is there undeniably on both sides
Thank you again for a thought provoking post, it keeps an old housbound man thinking 😉

  3. Scotland and most of all Glasgow are Labour strongholds and Conservative disaster… and have long been so. So how can BOTH Celtic AND Rangers have any right-wing following??? Bullshit, rubbish, this is what senseless and uninformed/uninforming journalism still want us to think…
