SNP in Secret talks with Rangers* ?

We have no way of verifying the legitimacy of this story which apparently appeared in the D*ily Rec*rd today. We where made aware of it by @stephend_1 on Twitter. The story goes as follows:
Details of SNP talks Re Rangers “TOP SECRET” – DR today
TALKS by the Scottish Government about crisis club Rangers have been marked “top secret”, it has emerged.
The SNP believe they are so sensitive they could wreck relations between Holyrood and Westminster.
Discussions were held between ministers, who have pledged support for the Ibrox club, administrators and HM Revenue and Customs.
First Minister Alex Salmond and Sports Minister Shona Robison were involved.
But a freedom of information request about the talks has been denied because disclosure “would be likely to prejudice substantially relations between the Scottish and UK Governments”.
When asked why, a spokesman said Salmond spoke to tax officials in January. He added: “The discussion centred on securing a settlement to enable Rangers to meet their obligations to the taxpayer and continue in business.”

Now we are aware that members of the Scottish Government had discussions with RFC and interested parties in the past but not in January before Rangers were placed in Administration. Now I’m no fan of the Union but if the Scottish Government are marking correspondence or meetings as ‘top secret’ and could lead to damaging relationships with the rest of the UK, this is not on.
Once again it appears that a club accused of corruption, non payment and withholding of Tax and VAT are being ‘given a hand’ by the Government in Scotland. Not only does this fall foul of FIFA and UEFA regulations it is also morally wrong.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on this.

  3. Given all that has gone before and is going on why would “you” consider voting for an independent Scotland. I`m no fan of the union either but somehow think I might be better off in it than out of it.

  5. “We have no way of verifying the legitimacy of this story…”
On this basis, I won’t be changing my voting intentions yet. But I may have to consider voting Green for Independence. 🙂
