The Celtic Network would like to extend our sympathies to the family of Joe McBride Who sadly passed away at the age of 74 after suffering a stroke.
Joe had a remarkable goals to games ratio for Celtic between 1965 and 1968 scoring 86 goals in 94 games. A record anyone can be proud off. Joe was top scorer in season 1965/66 and was well on his way way in season 66 / 67 scoring 36 before being injured in a match against Aberdeen which unfortunately made him miss out on being one of the Lisbon Lions.
On his return from injury against Morton in December 1967 Joe netted 3 times. Unfortunately Joe never really got back to the top of his game with Celtic and moved on to Hibernian in November 1968. He subsequently went on to play for Dunfermline and Clyde before retiring from the game in 1972.
His goal total for Hibernian was not too shabby either scoring 44 goals in 67 games. Joe was only capped twice for Scotland at senior level. All in all Joe played for nine clubs between 1957 and 1972 including a spell down south with Luton Town and Wolves before moving back up to Scotland to play for Partick Thistle and subsequently Motherwell where he caught the eye of Jock Stein and Sean Fallon who brought him to Celtic park for £22,000 which in 1965 was a fair price to pay for a player.
Joe McBride 1938 -2012 RIP.
