Everyone Loves Big Vic

We should be used to our star players being linked with clubs. Last season it was Emilio Izaguirre, Beram Kayal, Ki Sung Yeung & Scott Brown.
With this we all knew that these players would again be linked with a move away by the media but considering we have other stars from last season such as James Forrest, Fraser Forster, Charlie Mulgrew, Joe Ledley & Gary Hooper, it’s come as no surprise that another young player, brought in by Neil Lennon the same as all of the above has caught the media’s rumour mill attention.
Victor Wanyama had a tremendous season. I think it goes to show just how well he did when he had hardly hit double figures in games when the crowd had a chant too his name.
“Big Vic” for me personally is the one player in our side that really could go and make it with one of the big teams in the big leagues.
The bhoy for me has it all so it’s no surprise that he’s being linked away from the club but what does surprise me is that after just one season in Scotland, the names which he is being linked with.
So far I’ve witnessed rumours of Victor catching the eye of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Juventus & newly crowned EPL champions Man City.
These clubs hold massive gains for any player, although we are in our own right a massive club, the league we play in hinders our progress however an opportunity to move to any of these clubs has to make players, young players like Victor think.
So what should Celtic do if any bids are received for Vic?
Firstly, I’d like to see the young man stay for one more season at least, try to help the club get into the Champions League proper.
If this is achieved then his stock will only rise further. He’ll catch the eye of more clubs, be in a better position personally but also help Celtic as a club. If he and his team mates achieve Champions League proper status then the prestige that’ll bring on Celtic & Scottish football when we’re at an all time low will be huge.
However, as has been mentioned by many others throughout the years, football is a short career. Victor may see that what may be an opportunity today, may not be available tomorrow. If we take Izzy as an example, a player linked with the then EPL champions only to suffer an almost season ending injury. Hopefully Emilio has overcome this and will go onto further prove why such links with such huge teams were the norm last pre season.
Again, I really hope Victor stays for one season more at least but IF the level of interest is to be true, then it’s understandable why both club & player may give it some serious thought.
IF the club do give it some thought, then the number of clubs linked with Vic can only be a good thing too.
I’ve always liked the transfer rumour mill, with the pre-season antics of SevCo, I’m looking forward too it kicking off even more.
Let the silly season commence.

  1. Agreed. Would be interesting to know how often our players are mentioned as targets in ‘big league’ media
