Celtic Board should have gambled early.

Since Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink’s departure three years ago we have been screaming out for a big powerful centre forward the  type of guy who would complement the like of Stokes Hooper in the same way Sutton and Hartson complimented the smaller strikers around them. We gave it a shot with brining in Murphy last season and it never worked out personally I don’t think it ever will. We all know Sammy is not that type of striker in fact in reality he is a cracking attacking midfielder and who could argue after last season ?
Possibly more importantly over the same period we have been in need of an experienced centre half to help out and organise the defence. Big Dan was brought in to do that but that never worked out. Now because of Dan’s injury we knew well before the transfer window opening that we would have to find a replacement.
Now we all know the policy of the board that basically we must sell before we buy and the chances are that Ki who is on Olympic duty will be the top candidate to sell to bring in decent money but that could be weeks away. We have moved some players on which should have also freed up wages.
Personally I don’t know what is going on but the board should have took a gamble and told Lenny to get out there as soon as the window opened and brought in an old fashioned no nonsense striker and a centre half. Now we are meant to have a great scouting network so surely they must have identified a few people. We could have got them in ready for pre season and gambled on selling someone of Ki’s stature near the end of the window to recoup the money.
We could even negotiate a short term loan of around £6-8m from the bank and paid that back as soon as we got some money in. We have now heard from the manager that we may need to wait until we are sure of Champions league football before we can go and sign players. By that time there would be
one week of the window left and we will have a gun held to our heads by agents and clubs looking for as much money as they can get and end up with no one coming in till the New Year.
Now I’m not writing this because we lost some friendly games. Ajax could still have humped us with these two new players in position but at least they would be getting the benefit of having a full pre season program under their belts and get to know the players and the coaching methods which would be better preparation for our 3rd round qualifying match against a team in their mid season.
Celtic fans are not daft, we know we will never go back to the Martin O’Neill days of being able to attract players and offering the £30 –  £40k a week that would be financial suicide. However I do think once again we are hindering our chances of Champions League football and improving the team by leaving it too late again.
I’ll give credit where it’s due we have managed to unearth some diamonds in the rough over the past few seasons from the lower English leagues, Israel, France even Honduras. Surely there must be strikers or more importantly experienced Centre half’s out there who won’t cost the Earth and we could have had in place by now. Or maybe in reality the Board see us as a Europa League level club with ambitions of one day striking it lucky and making the Champions’ league group stage.
So let me make myself clear. I’m not advocating the board go mental and start paying over the top transfer fees or wages I’m just asking them to take a leap of faith.
PS. I received a nice letter from Peter Lawwell yesterday saying they need me back to support the club in hard times. I’d just like to say to Peter that unfortunately due to these hard times for the first time in 25 years I can’t afford a season ticket even spreading it over 10 months. If you are not prepared to take a leap of faith with the clubs finances then I’m sure as hell not taking a leap of faith with my family finances which are currently in a worse state than Celtic FC’s.

  1. Completly agree with your sentiment its been obviouse for a few seasons now a dominent cenre half is a must. Kelvin wison doe’s not cut it for me and as for rogne a guy i’d high hope’s for has been a dissapointment in my eye’s.
The manager and bord must have earmarked certen to leave ie:murphy, juarez, wilson, rassmason, I asume the club have a price in mind for these guy’s and get some money in and I asume large wage’s freedup.
So mr lawell (stand alone policy) finger out and get moving I cant bear to think about missing out on champ league this season.
Having said all that its hard to think of attanable player’s to sign there’s non in scotland I think good enought to grace the hoops iin these position’s.
