“We’re looking for a formation that suits us so that’s something we need to do more work on”
These were the words by our manager after our defeat last night in Amsterdam and for me I think he’s spot on.
Although we as supporters want to see the team win every game, preseason for me isn’t about results it’s about coming back from last season, remembering what we achieved last season but looking at way in which we can improve. The main aspect of preseason is getting our fitness level’s up to a competition level again.
You see for me personally it’s good that we can find these error’s in pre season, there was many error’s during last night’s game but I’d prefer to look at this on a positive slant as it means we can take them back to training and as Lenny says, work on them.
“I decided to change things about, I took a gamble with the back three but you might as well try it just now. I’ll take the rap for that”
Lenny and his coaching team know fine well what formations and tactics will work going forward next season however preseason allows them to try new things. A new setup was tried, yes this had failed but it’s all about learning what formations & tactics this current squad of players can work well on and what players can’t.
I’ve witnessed supporters in the past complain about former managers being one-dimensional, not having a plan B. I find it admirable that Lenny is trying new formations out, although it’s not worked according to plan now, what’s not to say that this won’t be successful later on this season?
My last point refers to transfers, I’d also like to think that maybe, just maybe the manager has used this game as an opportunity to show the decision makers within the club what is required at the club. We run very thin at the moment in defence and leading into our first game against Helsinki I along with many other supporters would hope to see a defender arriving.
I’m not saying that Lenny has specifically set out our side last night to lose just to prove a point but if it’s clear to us supporters, it surely must be clear to the coaching team and those who sign the cheques, that is this.
Reinforcements are needed.
