TCN’s FIRST BIRTHDAY
Today July 24th 2012 is the first anniversary of the launch of The Celtic Network. I vividly remember sitting in my house like a nervous kitten waiting to make the site live at 12.01 am one year ago today. I remember saying to my wife if the site could get 500 visitors a week I would be delighted.
Well what has happened with the site over the past year has left me humbled and amazed at the success and how the site has grown in its first year.
The site started with 15 partner sites and around 20 pages on the site and the aims for the first year should the site survive its first year are listed below.
1st year targets:
- 10,000 visitors for year one
- 3,000 visitors passed on to partner sites
- 30 – 40 partner sites
- 10 writers
- Raise some money for good causes
What actually has happened is listed below:
- Over 381,000 visitors for year one
- Over 23,000 visitors passed on to partner sites
- Over 30 live new feeds coming in from partner sites 24/7
- 66 partner sites
- Over 500 articles
- 115 pages of Celtic information and Image galleries, videos, music etc.
- Released an ebook to raise money for good causes (something that was not expected)
- Donated over £200 to good causes (must do better)
- 5 writers (looking for more)
The very first blog was written by Phil Mac Giolla Bhain who I must thank for the support, advice and encouragement he has given to the site in its first year.
A lot has changed since the birth of TCN. The past year showed that through the medium of social media fans of all clubs can find common ground and influence the present and the future of Scottish football. I would like to think that the example set by Scottish football fans can filter through to general life in Scotland and show that ordinary people can come together and shape the future of our country as a whole.
Only a couple of things that TCN set out in our original mission statement have not worked out as well as we had hoped. One is that we would have liked our partner sites to use the site more to discuss joint campaigns to counter act any lies spread by the Laptop Loyal about our club or supporters. However I now see and accept that people have their own sites/shows to run as well as their own lives so that may have been a wish too far. The other is the amount of money raised for good causes but that is mostly down to me not having any experience of running or organising charitable events. However I’m always open for suggestions and help.
At this point I would like to thank all our partner sites whether they be blogs, forums, pod casts, fans sites or supporters clubs for sticking by the site and making it a success.
As this stand at present I made a decision to add a pay pall donate button to the site with 20% going to the running of the site for season 2013/14 and 80% going into a fund to be split between the four good causes we support and promote. So even a donation of £2 a month from users would allow us to give these good causes a tidy sum of money. We are also willing to help promote any Celtic fan who is doing something to raise money for charities, they do not have to be connected to Celtic we will help promote any Celtic supporter and any charity. That is the ethos of our club and is at the core of TCN.
Over the piece I am absolutely delighted by the way the site has been absorbed and welcomed into the Celtic online community. So I would like to thank everyone who has visited the site, the guys who have made a great contribution by writing articles, replied to articles and a special thanks to all the people who donated money back in April which secured the site for next season. Not only did it cover all the costs but it also allowed us to make donations to our good causes plus a mental health charity.
One thing I can assure you of is that every penny donated to TCN either through PayPal or the eBook will be accounted for and published on the site. We will never have adverts on this site and we will never be anything other than a not for profit site which will promote Celtic fans online media and publications. We are always on the lookout for writers and bloggers. You don’t have to have written a blog in your life. We will provide you with a platform and support. Similarly we are always looking for more blogs, sites, forums, pod casts and supporters clubs to join us in creating the best Celtic fans resource we can be.
It still amazes me that an idea I had and first spluttered out on Over and Over thanks to Housey is where it is now. So once again thank you all for your support especially when I was fighting depression. I’d like to give special thanks to Seamus Cummins and Graham Wilson. The guys will know why.
*Remember we are running an SPL predictor league for season 2012/13. The first weeks fixtures will appear on Monday 30th of July as we are waiting to see if SKY/ESPN change any dates or kick off times
