Scottish Football Being Held To Ransom

It is my opinion that the SPL, SPL and the SFL in other words the whole of Scottish football are being held to ransom by a company who do not fit the criteria to join the SFL never mind the SFA. This company was invited to join the SFL in the spirit of good grace as I have pointed out above they did not meet the criteria to join that association.
After this show of good faith what has the SFL and others had in return? Well I’ll answer that question the way I see it. They have been slapped in the face and treated with absolutely no respect or humility by this company.
Now please stay with me whilst I frame the article.
After gaining entry to the SFL the company was required to gain a licence from the SFA to play football in Scotland. The company could not satisfy the criteria to be members of the SFA therefore they have gone down the road of applying for the licence held by a club currently going through administration and then finally liquidation.
The former club are in this position because they cheated by not paying their PAYE and NI contributions during season 2011/12 therefore HMRC decided to bounce them into administration. Added to unpaid taxes there are unpaid bills to a list of creditors as long as your arm. For this they were fined £135,000.00 by the SFA a fine which has not yet been paid. Amongst those creditors where football clubs in Scotland and abroad amounting to over £3m.
The former club have also been investigated by the SPL regarding players being issued with dual contracts that the SFA or SPL were not made aware of. The SPL came to the conclusion that the old club have a Prima Facia case to answer in regards to these payments. Sanctions could include the stripping of titles gained during the period that these dual contracts existed.
The Logical and honest way forward was for the Authorities to offer the transfer of the old clubs membership to the newco provided that they in return carry the can for the old clubs misdemeanours after all in gaining that licence they would become that old club with its history and honours won intact. This I’m lead to believe would also leave the liable for any punishments handed out by the Football authorities and HMCR.
Negotiations started a few weeks ago and a deadline was set by the football authorities for business to be settled and concluded by Friday 27/July/2012. Mean while the new company had been drawn to play Brechin City in the Ramsdens cup at Glebe park. The match was due to be played today but was moved until tomorrow to allow for TV coverage.
The way I see it what has happened is that the new company have agreed to take on some of the punishments of the old club but not the future punishment by the SPL for running dual contracts. I believe sevco has used the tie against Brechin City as leverage this week knowing that Brechin had set up facilities for a tv crew and tickets for the match had been sold both by Brechin City and Sevco.
By holding out till Friday which was the deadline for sevco to agree to all the terms laid down by the SFA and SPL they knew that by not agreeing to the SPL’s conditions thus not meeting the terms of the entire package Brechin city and the SFL would have lost money and may, I’m supposing be left open to action from BBC Alba to recover costs for a game which could not go ahead. I have also found out that Duff and Phelps have to transfer oldcos SPL share to Dundee to allow them to play in the SPL next weekend. So are Duff & Phelps and sevco working hand in hand here increasing the pressure on the football authorities?
I believe the SFA knew all of  this and caved in granting a temporary licence for “The Rangers” to play the tie. As far as I’m aware this temporary licence runs till next Friday and the question is what is to stop ‘The Rangers’ using the same tactics? The temporary licence has also allowed ‘The Rangers’ to sign a player who played for a club which is still owed £800,000.00 which frankly is a joke.
In my opinion the SFA should have stood their ground on Friday and refused sevco the transfer of the licence from the old company and sent them packing. However it seems that Scottish football is being held to ransom by some shady characters running or attempting to run a one football club in Scotland.
However this mess ends up there is one truth that has been shown and that is Mr Doncaster and Mr Regan’s positions are untenable and they should take Campbell Ogilvie with them.

  1. Great post James – thanks for cutting through all the tosh.
The only saving grace I can tease out of it is that it becomes more obvious what they’re all up to the longer this goes on. Time for some public forum where direct questions are answered – telly or somethiing. After all, if they think their so important to the national game – the ‘kulchur’ even – then maybe they have a duty to explain why to a good proportion of the Scottish population.
By the way, wouldn’t surprise me if Dundee’s licence still has an embarrassing name on it.

  3. The irony of all this is that they still require the most elemental of beings…ie the SFA to guide them through these murky waters…however it is those same souls who will ultimately have power that will rain Hell down on them.
The reason why I say this is…is because these cretins who masquerade as officials of our game will inevitably succumb to the greater force and the greater power of FIFA. Lets not forget Sevco [formely Rangers] are nothing in the world of football. Indeed in the pantheon of great teams they dont even get into the third division.
