When we think of Helsingborgs we undoubtedly think of king Henrik himself almost immediately, indeed they even have a statue of the great man himself outside their 17,000 Olympia stadium, but that’s not all this harbour city club has in common with Celtic, in fact much like Celtic it has two very striking ‘club cultures’ similar to our own, it’s said to be ‘stipulated in Helsingborgs association bylaws that the club plays attractive football’ much in the same way we have an unwritten rule to play ‘the Celtic way’ or ‘pure, beautiful inventive football’ as a man much more eloquent than me put it!
Also as the club hails from the Scania region in southern Sweden whichat one point in history was Danish land, indeed some Helsingborgs fans have a friendship with FC Copenhagen because of this, it strongly considers itself to be Scanian along with Malmo their rivals (didn’t Malmo have a striker named Larsson who done a bit of damage at ibrox?!) much in the same way as Barcelona consider themselves Catalonian or athletico bilbao consider themselves to be Basque, and of course the same way in which Celtic are proud of their irish heritage, which means it is often rare to see a Swedish flag at Helsingborgs games rather you will most likely see the scania flag which is basically a Sweden flag with a red background instead of blue, as the club and its fans feels strongly connected to a region not entirely of its homeland or ‘birth country if you will, much in the same way that you will see irish tricolours at Celtic park.
Now it’s been a few days since the draw and we have all had a chance to check out our opponents which for most of us means looking out for the score in their next game! That game was today (sun) and the romped to a 7-2 win against Kalmaar FF a team in12th position of 16, If any celts fans thought this tie would be a walkover then that result couldn’t have come at a better time, it leaves Helsingborgs in 5th place on 31 points just 2 points away from a European place having played 18 games, one game less than the other teams, their game in hand however is against top of the table Elfsborg so the outcome of that may be a better gauge of how well they are playing this season that game is scheduled to go ahead on the 18th*. So this will be no easy task for Celtic they will have dangerous players and spells where they hold the ball better than us and put us under pressure but I feel confident that with a couple more games under our belt we have enough in the tank to make it to the promised land of the champions league and all the riches it brings.By
