Brain washed or bigotry

I had the pleasure of playing golf yesterday with a friend of mine..a true blue nose. A passionate professional man who has been a fan all his days. Although very articulate and intelligent he hails from the school of thought that says political correctness has taken the fun out of bigotry. He maintained that turning up at Ibrox and venting his spleen was his therapy for the week and brought a sense of calmness to his world. Clearly we were at odds on that one. Although he did make a very valid point which was: “You cant really blame us as we have got away with it forever.” So true…so very true.

Can you remember the Partick Thistle player who was booked for making the sign of the cross as he ran on to the pitch? What would have happened if a Muslim player had turned to Mecca in the tunnel and prayed? Not likely I know, but we can be assured a great deal of tolerance would have been shown to him.

Of couse we have moved on from there…err not! We still have the loyalists ‘venting their spleen’ only this time it is at venues where the local bobbies dont have the resource or the stomach to implement the law.

So what is it that continues to consume our old ‘Old Firm” cousins? What makes their brand of football loyalty different to ours? Certainly ignorance is at the heart of it. Fear of the unknown. They never did understand that the vast majority of Celtic fans could see the other side of the coin and could turn the other cheek. Lack of a religious education which teaches charity and tolerance. I recall as a wee boy aged 5 going to school for the first time. A different one from my pals. That afternoon after school I chapped on his door and asked him if he was coming out to play?

He told me he wasnt allowed to play with me any more. I couldnt understand what he meant when he said it was because I was a ‘Roman Candle’. My first encounter with ignorance. He wasnt to blame.

Mind you the Catholic Archdiocese had a lot to answer for too. Our school was too small for the numbers and we had to take two classrooms at a ‘non-Catholic’ school [Remember that term…there was us and everyone else was a non-Catholic] round the corner. The church insisted that we assemble at our school and be bussed round the corner starting 15 minutes later. We then had our playtime on our own 15 mins after everyone else. To top it all and this is where no one thought this through, our lunch time started, you guessed, 15 mins later and so on up until chucking out time. Now all that did was make us different and therefore a target. And targets we were as the school would wait for us coming out and knock seven bells out of us and chased us for our lives. That could be considered character building. It certainly was for me anyway. So thank you to all who took the time to wait at the school gates and guide me on my way.

But back to the loyal and their unique brand of supporter culture. Living in exile I can see things from a different perspective now. What did drive this hate for us ‘cafflicks’ was fear. Fear that we could be better than them. Fear that we were united culturally and therefore stonger. Fear that our numbers woud rise and we would take over the world. The numbers did rise and we do occupy a greater number of influential posts now than ever. That is down to education and drive and hunger to succeed. So a self fulfilling fear.

Another thing is intransigence. They are quite simply stuck in the past and are moribund. They dont know how to change things up, move on, lighten up. They are constrained by the tightness of their replica shirts squeezing the oxygen of reason out of them. Just look at the Scottish media and you will see what I mean. Delusional drivel is being spouted and spoken every day. At no point has any of them said ‘lets move on’. Embrace this new chapter and build a club that is tolerant and welcoming to all. What a chance they have and what an opportunity to lay down a marker in history. But no its got worse. The songs are back and louder. The bile is greater and more tasteless. The recriminations go on and on with the threatened backlash aimed at every section of the Scottish society. Even down to the absurdity of this all being a Catholic conspiracy. So you see nothing changes…fear and loathing.

Lastly back to my golfing partner’s parting shot: “We’re only buying season tickets so you bastards dont get away with this.”
Rational thinking indeed.

  1. Great blog sir ,had the same sort o trouble at school ,being a ‘proddy’ Celtic supporter, was nnt the thing to do ,however it was ”character building ” . The animal that is ”ra peepul” is snarling louder time to bullet it and put it out of its misery ! BDO where are you ?

    1. Thanks Dhougal…yes indeed your perspective would be very enlightening indeed. You should share your experiences. Mind you at my school a pal of mine supported Rangers…and honestly he never encountered one bit of trouble. He even admitted he sang the songs as loud as anyone. I live in Ongar in Essex…far from the madding crowd.

  3. Don’t play golf with this man. Amusing as your piece is, and yes it brings back a lot of memories for me too, tolerance of this man’s attitude to you and through you to everyone from a similar background to you will merely serve to further cement his ignorant views into his deluded, warped brain. Their attitude is NOT banter, it is demeaning to us and is centered around the concept that they are doing us a favour ‘allowing’ us to share this society with them. i.e. it is ‘their’ society, they arra peepul and if we want to live here we’d best know our place. Great article though!

    1. Thanks for you observation…as I have often said dignity sits at the very centre of our culture. I take your point though…and anyway I like spanking him at golf!!!
      HH

      1. Fair enough, hope you spank him hard. Can I tell you a wee similar story. My dad plays golf at a club in Ayrshire and met two chaps out on the course, who asked him to go round with them. Fair enough, so he plays and they ask him to meet again. So he does and at the second game it transpires that both men are recently retired policemen, mid to senior management level policemen. During the round they give the opinion that Neil Lennon deserved to have bombs sent to him because of his attitude. My dad plays out his round and thanks them for the game, he is retired and barely knows anyone at the club so some company was welcome as he usually plays alone. Well he was playing alone the next week, they weren’t long standing friends of his obviously, so ditching two morons not fit to police anyone never mind a whole community they no doubt feel antipathy toward was easier for him.

  5. I watched the game on Sunday, and there it was evident for everyone to hear and see. Anti catholic and loyalist paramilitary hate filled songs louder and more blatant than ever. Yet nothing mentioned in the MSM.

    1. Yes sadly for them yet another Catholic conspiracy was at foot as they toiled for a draw. As regards the songs…pathetic as always.

  7. Being abroad you’ll maybe not have heard but Sevco FC have had fans arrested for sectarian breaches of the peace at every game they have ever played. Also, you’ll find the local plod at these ‘diddy’ grounds a lot less tolerant than their big town work mates. ‘Stomach to implement the law’ is a lot easier when there are less than 5,000 people police.

  9. Interesting piece McAl, I can identify with it. Like many, I was subjected to “character building” by the unelightened as a youngster, as indeed were my own two sons twenty odd years later. I remember as a 5 year old being sworn at on my way home from school and then asking my dad what a Fenian bastard was.

I tend to agree with hingmae though when it comes to accepting this attitude nowadays and I think you should ram a 3 wood up your “friend”s bigoted erse.

I stopped taking the condescending “I don’t mind that you’re a Catholic” sh!te from those knuckledraggers a long time ago. I mean the sort of people who grace you with conversation in the bar but always limit it to the football or religion. I now tell them politely to go do one if that’s all they have to say to me. Arseholes, each and every one.

For the record, I have many Rangers/Sevco supporting friends who do not fall into the categories described above and I play golf with them. I don’t mind them being proddies………

    Hail Hail

  13. Your words…”Of couse we have moved on from there…err not! We still have the loyalists ‘venting their spleen’ only this time it is at venues where the local bobbies dont have the resource or the stomach to implement the law”

You think because some Police Officers work in small, bigot free towns that they are not aware or indeed turn a blind eye to the bile? Get a grip, you should go to these so called “venues” where local police officers very much have the stomach to impliment the law…and i,ll tell you why..because they dont want situations where you can lose your life because you went to the wrong school or wore the wrong colour of football shirt…

Your big city words along with your bigotory can stay in the so Called “big citys”

    1. As far as respect for the law is concerned my brother is a member of the constabulary…but tell me how many have been arrested for such behaviour last Sunday?

  15. Growing up in Belfast, I was certainly exposed to the Brain washed bigots. however, calling them brain washed only serves to give them and excuse. at what point in life do people realise that wrong is, well just that, wrong.

when it come to drawing comparisons, I believe that it is all in the name-
