Green Brigade – Upcoming Boycott

Two weeks ago, we put out the above statement about the continued harassment of the Green Brigade. The response and support we received was excellent from the rest of the Celtic support, and obviously this is something we are very grateful for.
The reason for this statement was because we felt it was time that the extent of this harassment was made public. We also hoped that Strathclyde Police would see sense and end the criminalisation of our group. Sadly, if anything, they have increased the pressure since this was released. A newspaper report last year claimed that one of their senior officers had promised to ‘smash the Green Brigade’ and it certainly looks like their plan is in motion.
Last Wednesday was a special night at Celtic Park. The display before the match was beyond our wildest expectations, the atmosphere was electric from start to finish and more importantly, Celtic beat arguably the best team in world football. It is a night that will live long in the memory of everyone connected to the club.
However, while the rest of the support were still on Cloud 9, our group was brought back down to Earth with a bump as it transpired that Strathclyde Police had visited yet another two members’ home with a view to charging them. To put this into perspective, this means that just under 50% of the Green Brigade have either faced, or are facing a police charge/ban from football.
Last week, the first home league match since we released the initial statement, a young fan from within 111 was arrested and taken away for the ‘crime’ of having a water bottle inside a football stadium. When questioned about their actions, one of the senior officers within the stadium, Alex Kelly, smugly replied that “if you don’t play ball, we won’t play ball.” In other words, this young fan was being used as a pawn in their game.
On top of that, news broke that they had also visited a fan in Liverpool having (wrongly) assumed that he was involved in the Green Brigade. Why they visited him remains unclear just now but it is something which we’re looking into, and obviously concerned about.
We’ve also heard worrying developments involving a member of the Govan Emerald CSC, which will be revealed over the weekend in a statement from their own members. It wouldn’t be right for us to comment on this any further until they have released this publically.
It has come to the stage where we have to act and fight back. We can’t continue to let the Police have free reign to arrest and charge whoever they please. It is having an astronomical effect on people’s livelihoods. Those members who are left without a charge can’t even enjoy the football anymore in case it leads to a chap at the door that could change their lives forever. The grim reality is that if we don’t act now, there may not be a group left come the end of the season.
As a result, we have no choice but to highlight this further in the form of a two-match boycott from Celtic Park. This will begin immediately and means that during the forthcoming league match V Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Scottish Cup match V Arbroath, the Green Brigade will not be present whatsoever. This is clearly not a decision that has been taken lightly. Our members live for going to watch and support the team we love, just like every other fan out there. Sadly, we aren’t being treated like every other fan and in fact face victimisation and harassment on a scale that is unimaginable. We hope that this boycott will raise awareness of our situation and the end result will be that Strathclyde Police will relent. We’d also once again ask Celtic PLC to defend the fans by using their considerable influence to bring an end to these oppresive police tactics.
We would ask that everyone in Section 111 joins us in this protest and that the area is left empty during both matches. We have been very lucky in that other season-book holders within our section have supported us all the way and we hope that this will continue. Fans in this section who want to join us in protest may have to cancel their payment for the Arbroath match if they are on the home cup ticket scheme.
We’d like to stress again that this is not something that will be taken lightly. Many of our members haven’t missed a Celtic match in years so it’s clearly not been easy to come to this decision. However, it is simply a last resort as this cannot be allowed to continue. The continued support of those in 111, and indeed the rest of the Celtic community is greatly appreciated and we can’t thank you enough. Without this, the group wouldn’t have survived.
We’d also like to make it clear to those who wish to see the end of the Green Brigade, that we will be sticking by the motto created when we were formed in 2006 and will not go down without a fight.

    1. Anyone who has ever “done the huddle” sang ” just can’t get enough” , “the junior capo chant” etc. should fully support the boycott for the good of not only our game but democracy in our society

      1. I sit in the Investors section and there is an elderly very nice gentleman who sits beside me and my two children. Unlike a lot of the people in that section who seem to want to drink as much alcohol as they can this man brings a bottle of water to every game as his means of refreshment. I guess Strathclydes finest will be rewarding him for his abstinence by arresting him at the ICT game given
they won”t have the Green Brigrade to victimise that day

  3. I’m a season ticket holder and am shocked at the treatment the GB are receiving. My 10 year old loves the GB and they add massively to the support of our great club.
The CFC board must stand up for the GB.

  7. It’s a sad day when it comes to this but a line must be drawn in the sand. We either live in a democracy or a police state and it is obvious that the police are abusing their position as well as wasting tax payers money on harassing innocent individuals. I wonder if Mr Salmond will get involved or is he only interested in keeping cushty with his brethren.
I fully support your action. In the words of a famous civil rights movement ” We Shall Overcome”

  9. I wish you wouldn’t carry out this boycott guys.

We all support you but is a boycott really going to change anything apart from giving our opponents some satisfaction that they think they are winning.

Defiance is sometimes better than silence.

    1. I wish we wouldnt keep getting knocks at the door, under false pretences.

For all the doubters there will be more on this from someone NOT in the GB very shortly.

  11. Shameful and shocking and 1 of the reasons i’m not at Celtic Park this season as the club do nothing to help the fans out,it seems they want to help police and the club will lose out here as i know many many fans who if it wasn’t for the GB being there every week they wouldn’t even go to the games.Peter Lawell and co should be having words with them asap and his head of security at Celtic park who it seems wants to ban fellow fans also at any opportunity.

  13. It is scandalous, that in a so called free and liberated society you have to put up with such harassment for supporting your team! It’s time the club seriously questioned and challenged the authorities on his matter.

You have my support – do what you fell necessary.

There is something seriously wrong in his country – freedom of expression???

  15. have you thought about getting groups that defend individuals’ rights to free expression involved? what about groups/ngos that monitor police harassment? i would have thought that it would worth while looking into a joint action against the police for the harassment you receive. a fine can hurt an individual but if you were to work together you should be able to put a stop to this. the police aren’t that clever. who was the officer who said he was going to smash the green brigade and on what basis? what avenues are there for logging a formal complaint against this officer and seeing that action is taken one way or another. as a public servant he should be made to justify his statement and prove that he is not wasting tax payers’ money. are you recording the harassment? why don’t you register an official complaint after each game where harassment has taken place with a list of witnesses to support your case? what i want to say is be smart, don’t be intimidated, if you have done nothing wrong then the law is on your side. make it work for you. good luck, hail hail!

  17. Sad day when games have to be boycotted but I fully support. The GB but don’t know if this will make a blind bit of difference to the police.Would it not be better to not just attend and be defiant showing they will never bring u down and give it ure full repertoire of songs?

  23. I was in Lyon when Henrik broke his leg, the other memory I have of that night was the Lyon support being led by a choir and I wished we had the same. The GREEN BRIGADE have done this. I stood in the Jungle and if I was a younger man I’d be with the GB. Don’t give up! Get the other areas of the stadium involved ask them to turn their back for 1 minute at games in support of the GREEN BRIGADE you can’t do this on you’re own.

  41. 100% support all the way. Take the mason infested police force to the cleaners.
Do them, like they do unto others. Sue them. Human rights them until they weep.
Make them wish they’d never started down this road. And get the board to speak up for you….NFL gave you due respect and deference at the end of last season on live TV for the world to see.
The ‘tifo’ you organised at the Barça game was witnessed by the world.

One small note though, the young lad was wrong to take a plastic bottle to the game, it is against the rules, do not give rats any rope to hang you with.

  45. As a season ticket holder for over 20 years i have watched you young guys grow up through the different sections of the stadium were yous started until a happy medium was reached at 111. You breathe a new life and excitement into the match which hasn’t been seen since the fall of the “jungle”. Your banners this season outwith the barca game have been outstanding. That game brought it to another level. Thank you GB……..its fun at the games now.
Shame on the bullys at cop shop…….maybe they are missing all the overtime they got wen the sevco used to be omit out league.

  51. I back the Green Brigade and watch in awe with a lot of things they do. I obviously don’t have a choice whether or not i want to go to the game living in the states. However, The boycott would only be hurting Celtic as a club. Attendances, especially at cup games, have been poor. Well I’m really focusing on the cup games where we get 20,000 for a game. Not going to the game will lessen that number and on a year where the club has just announced losses throughout the year, its not the best idea. Maybe attending the game but a silent protest? Celtic Park will be a horrifically silent place during these two games. And you will be missed. Do what you think is best, obviously. Hail Hail.

PS, any chance of being able to get a few Green Brigade stickers on a website or something? Would be great to have over here. Hope i can get an email to let me know. All the best bhoys.

  55. At game v Benfica man behind me had brought bottle of juice in for his son. A steward saw this and said that was not allowed but to leave it with him and he took the bottle away. He came back 2 minutes later with the juice poured into a cup. THAT’S how to treat the fans and the man did nothing different from the lad who was arrested. Will be a duller place without you guys but can understand why you see no other options. Good luck

However, I think you need to make the Celtic board sit up and take notice and without you there for those two games is going to make them think. Good luck in your campaign and don’t let them hun supporting boys in blue grind you down.

  59. I think its clear that the GB have been treated extremely badly by the authorities however my view would be that strathclyde police will actually see this boycott as a victory for them which is the last thing you want. What has to be done us fight fire with fire, where the authorities are filming you, start filming them, start taking them to court over harrassment,I’m sure someone at the top would soon get pretty irritated by 300 phone calls or letters every monday with complaints or threats of court action.
If you feel this is the only course of action then thats fair enough & as you’ve said it wont have been a decision made lightly, unfortunately the game wont be the same.

  61. I am an old burd who, after the Barcelona game, wanted to run away and join the Green Brigade. The boycott will achieve the desired effect of bringing the situation they face to the attention of the rest of the stadium. Thereafter, it is imperative that some legal eagle from within our number acts as counsel to the Brigade and advises how best to play the game.

  65. I was walking into the Barca game in plenty of time to take part in the display when I was approached by a cop. He instantly became aggressive insisting that I was drunk and demanding to know how much I had to drink. When i explained that I had 3 pints, was sober and didn’t think too much of his attitude he behaved like a thug. He only capitulated when he realised he had probably picked on the wrong fan. I am 40 and have been going to CP since the 80’s and have never encountered such random aggression from a ‘PUBLIC SERVANT”. I realise my experience is nothing compared to those of the group but it gave me an insight into the general attitude towards Celtic fans. I put it down to jealously on his part but I could have easily been arrested and missed the game. I would have had a lot of explaining to do to my employers all because of some jumped up baby cop bigot!. This has to stop Peter Lawwell. The PLC must protect their own or face the consequences! Up the GB..No Surrender!

Sorry I have not been able to comment for over a day but I could not miss out on registering my support.

I have never seen The Green Brigade in real life as I have only been able to attend Celtic Park once in many years and that was the Kilmarnock 2-0 game a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I was in the area immediately above you and was restricted to hearing your noise and vibrations soaring up from below although that particular day it sounded very much like a vain attempt at encouragement. It may actually have proved very positive for me because it proved just how much the Brigade put into raising the atmosphere even at pretty dismal games. That for me justifies beyond any question not simply the presence but even the necessity of The Green Brigade in the revival of “the thunder” at Celtic Park. It confirmed, if it needed confirmation, my impression from television and audio coverage that this group of supporters are something special. I guess Neil Lennon himself proved it to me without doubt when he went to make a very specific presentation of the trophy to you.

It is shattering for me, therefore, to read your article. I am old enough to have regularly witnessed the behaviour of the police in the days when I am convinced they had a very specific and biased agenda. I had it on good authority that these prejudicial activities were for the most part a thing of the past. It would appear that both my source and myself have been duped. For it to have risen to the level of out and out targeted harassment is beyond the pale and the Celtic board need to be as active in pursuit of justice for The Green Brigade as it was in its initial condemnations of its behaviour. A direct challenge to the directives of police chiefs is an absolute requirement and the demand for an apology as some recompense for damage caused and as a first step towards reconciliation. For Celtic to remain silent in the face of such obvious vindictiveness, is a greater shame than the conduct of the police itself. It is incredible that the Brigade has to make all the moves to seek a remedy. Faithful beyond belief, committed beyond the call of duty, these supporters should not need to sacrifice their greatest enjoyment in order to receive equal treatment from the very body that above all others should understand and put into practice the concept of equality. It grieves me intensely that you, sniper, and you enthusiastic ‘mates’ feel obliged to take the action you plan, an action that denies you one of your greatest pleasures, in order to have your grievance recognised. I wish you did not have to do so, but, if that is what in your minds it takes, then you have my wholehearted support. I only hope that Celtic acknowledge your appeal and stands up for the best thing that has hit European football terraces for many a decade. “May the force be with you” and the other one leave you alone.

  71. As a Celtic supporter living in Arbroath, I will be disappointed that the GB will not be at the game. Disappointed but fully supportive to the extent that, although a ST holder, I won`t be there either. The GB deserves the support of ALL Celtic supporters.

  75. With the Scottish Medias current obsession with our attendances the last thing we need is to lose the most colourful and vocal part of our support- the incredible Green Brigade! To do this would just be giving them a stick to beat us with, and they would take great pleasure in doing so! Instead we should attempt through the use of sites such as this, facebook/twitter and word of mouth to get as many people as possible to go to these games (hopefully sellout) and sing and chant in support of our club and the GB. 60,000 supporters singing “Stand up for the Green Brigade” and “We’re doing the huddle for the Green Brigade” is much better than a quiet, half empty Celtic Park, and would be a great advert for the club. The Green Brigade have become an integral part of the modern Celtic, and are responsible for bringing “the thunder” back to Paradise. What they achieved when Barcelona came to Celtic Park was breath taking, and everyone who attended that match I feel should go to these games to show their appreciation and support to the guys who made it that bit more special with their display. Afterall “We are Celtic Supporters Faithful Through and Through!”.

  77. Fully behind your boycott, and will be joining in, and letting Celtic FC know why, in writing.

  79. i think the boycott should go ahead. if only to make Celtic fc sit up and take notice of what Parkhead would be like EVERY WEEK without the GB. It’s worth the sacrifice and any ‘victory’ seen by those who oppose the GB will be pyrrhic.
