Statement on behalf of Govan Emerald CSC

A member of our club is currently serving a 2 year football banning order which is under appeal at the High Court in Edinburgh.

As is common practice, those under football banning orders are frequently visited by the police in the lead-up to football matches to ensure and remind them that they should stay away from the forthcoming match or face arrest. Our member had the pleasure last week of having two police officers visit his home on Wednesday and the same again on Thursday to warn against attending both the Aberdeen and Benfica fixtures.

Rightfully believing this level of attention to be wholly unnecessary, our member visited Helen Street Police Station to complain. It was what the police said next which is most important – should they be telling the truth that is. They claimed that they had received a phone call from Jamie Church (Celtic security) who had advised them that our member was planning on going to Lisbon for the Benfica match – he was not. This would have been a difficult task for him regardless considering Strathclyde Police were actually holding his passport until this impromptu meeting.

Further still, the police officer expanded by claiming that they are simply acting on the information being supplied to them by Celtic . The Officer stated that they really aren’t interested in chasing up Celtic fans and/or members of the Green Brigade however are doing so at the request of the club. The officer went on to claim that Celtic want to see an end to any Republican songs being aired at Celtic matches and with actually coming out and saying so potentially causing an upset with a large percentage of the support, they are instead working the Strathclyde Police in going after individuals one by one in an attempt to secure bans.

While we obviously hope for this information to be untrue or at worst twisted we believe it to be a worrying development and it is in the best interest of the Celtic support for it to be public knowledge. It is even more concerning when considering how this information fits in with what the Green Brigade have already told us regarding how their members are currently being targeted.

The Govan Emerald CSC and The Temple Tims CSC gives its unequivocal support to the Green Brigade in their current struggle against the police, and indeed any other Celtic supporters currently being harassed or victimised. We call on Celtic to distance themselves from the above claims and going forward to do far more to defend the people who are the very lifeblood of our great club.

  1. If this turns out to be true I believe the first step should be to stop buying any Celtic FC merchandising including food and beverages and the Paradise Windfall for 2 dates of the GB Boycott.
TCN FULLY BACK Govan Emerald CSC , The Temple Tims CSC AND The Green Brigade

  3. I really hope and pray that this turns out to be false but I can see it being true.

I have had a similar dealing with Mr Church and was put under a banning order for 3 matches whilst an investigation was launched… (Of which an Old firm game was missed which really p*ssed me off). I was accused of a racial crime when the ball deflected off an Arsenal player to go in the net… The person accused was described as 6ft, Slim with blonde hair(Im 5,7 little chubby and black hair). I tried to contact Mr Church 3 to 4 times a day and he refused to take any calls. Eventually the police came to visit as I had to harras them knowing I had done nothing wrong, the crime I was accused of meant I could have lost my job but to Mr Church it meant nothing, the man acts like ex military or police on a power trip, and the supervisor stewards will tell you this (off the record for fear of losing their jobs). I cancelled my ticket for that season as I was totally disillusioned the way the celtic security, ticket office treated me… All I asked for was an apology for my inconvenience caused to but that was too much for them to openly admit he got it wrong.

Im back at celtic park, sitting in section 111 (not a GB member) But will be supporting them with the 2 game boycott. They have brought the atmosphere back to Celtic park and deserve the support from all areas of ground and I would urge fellow celtic fans to support them, if not by boycotting the game but boycott buying any merchandise on the day from catering, the shops, programmes.

Finally I hope Celtic can officially come out and distance themselves from The Police comments, but having dealt with Jamie Church and knowing the kind of man he is, I think it will be hard for Celtic to do so, as in my view they Mr Church is probably guilty..(this is my personal view)

  5. Next time they come up with a story like this let them have some evidence. Record meetings etc. We keep hearing the polis did this the polis did that but nothing to back it up. I for one have some time for the polis and until someone provides evidence that they have done something wrong then I am going to assume that they haven’t.

  7. I too have dealings with Jamie church & his boss ronnie hawthorn who summoned me to a meeting at parkhead after I had an altercation with a steward who I witnessed pushing a young boy down the stairs in 111, this was back in 2006 just as the green brigade were starting to have an impact at the games, I told Jamie church that I would be bringing my lawyer to the meeting & he nearly choked on the fone telling me that wasn’t allowed but I said if he didn’t allow it then I would raise an action through my lawyer, he phoned back shortly & said it would be allowed but the lawyer was allowed no part of the meeting & he was only there to observe, this we agreed to but the upshot of the meeting was that they only wanted to talk about my actions not the steward who pushed the boy or refused to let me see the CCTV of the incident, at the end of a farcical episode I was given my season card back & my lawyer told them I would be seeking compensation for the games that I had been banned from as if you are found not guilty then you can claim the revenue back from games missed & I think I got about £200 back, this in in the t’s & c’s of your season ticket so please claim back for any games you’ve missed due to the police or stewards, fight it all the way cause the majority of fans are behind the gb.

  9. The statement to the effect that police have no interest in the Green Brigade directly contradicts their assertion to press and ‘on the record’ that they planned to ‘smash the Green Brigade’. Although they later qualified that statement it’s pretty clear what their intention was!

The best way forward is to seek legal advice and to make a formal complaint. I understand anyone’s reluctance to do so thinking that the complaint will be stonewalled (which it may be initially) but a process can then be initiated asking searching questions.

The police have a duty to answer such complaints and are accountable for decisions they make.

Others have done similar both football supporters and the public at large & police have been forced to accept culpability.

Fight fire with fire. If no complaint is made the authorities will spin that there was nothing to complain about!

  11. I see Celtic have distanced themselves from the police report but also made an accusation that somehow people have started a witchhunt against Jamie Church, they call jamie church an integral part of the celtic family… I actually have myself questioning what that makes me now, since I was wrongly accused by celtic and in particular treated like dirt by this man. As a fan, spending £500 on a season ticket, 2 or 3 new tops each season, food and drinks and a programme every match, plus the extras for cup tickets and away ticket, i thought id be classed as an integral part of the celtic family, but after being wrongly accused I wasnt afforded the apology I asked for and deserved. This same guy goes home every month with his salary paid for by the likes of me, you and all other paying fans. My comment below wasnt some witchhunt accusation, this was a personal experience suffered at the hands of this ingnorant man who looks down at fans with contempt (this is my personal view).

  13. Dont know why people are wanting others to boycott the game. Hows that a good idea? Yeah, lets get others to boycott and have 5,000 people at a game. How does that help the club at all?
Celtic came out with a statement so there you go.

I support the Green Brigade with a lot that they do. They’ve learned to take the politics out of it which only helps their cause. However, boycotting the games does nothing but hurt the club. On a year where we just reported losses, why hurt the club financially even more? Do a silent protest, show up late and make people take notice. Dont boycott the game entirely.
