Celtic battle to beat Ajax 2-1 in Champions League

We started the Champions League with a superb display in Italy losing 2-0 to AC Milan after playing so well and we should have won that game, we than take on Barcelona with 10 men for a while, play well and lose 1-0, tonight we didn’t play our best and we win 2-1, I don’t care how we won tonight, all we needed was 3 points and we got it, the away goal for Ajax might come back to haunt us, but we focus on tonight for now and 2 lucky events for the goals

With Celtic missing many key players we went into tonight’s game more in hope than anything, for me we played very well in defence, we cleared things, we threw bodies at things and our keeper made a few good saves, the first half Ajax hit the post and we were lucky Ajax were lacking the experience they have tonight, with a few injuries. Celtic always make things hard for the fans leaving us biting our nails, tonight at 2-0 we lost the goal and we were at that moment, but we got there, 3 points is the important thing tonight. The only downside is if we draw in Holland the goal tonight late on by Ajax comes into play, but it may not, 2-0 would have been perfect

Celtic went 1-0 up with a brilliant penalty by a player slowly coming back to form after missing a few games. Stokes was fouled in the box, the ref pointed to the spot, it felt like a 5 minute wait with all the hustling and pushing on the edge of the box but Forrest kept calm and fired a brilliant unstoppable shot high to the goalkeepers left to take us into the half time break with the goal we probably didn’t deserve, but like you, I don’t care, you take the breaks when they come, we did control the ball a lot better tonight considering the pressure and players missing, we are slowly starting to become a real good European side, winning while not playing the best we have

The second half saw us sit a lot deeper and try to hit Ajax on the break, and many times we were wasteful with our counter attacks, we missed Commons badly tonight and it showed, Samaras I thought had a very average game, he kept giving the ball away, but as the second half moved on he started to get behind the Ajax right back and get crosses in and it was a Samaras run that lead to the second goal 10 minutes into the second half, he beat his man, got to the line, pulled it back, the ball was poorly cleared, we all watched as Kayal stepped onto it thinking “PLACE IT” and again, like the penalty, lady luck was on our side, the ball hit an Ajax defender and flew into the bottom right of the goal, 2-0 and a lucky 2-0 at that, but who cares, 2-0, you want and take the luck

Kayal shoots towards goal and a lucky deflection makes it 2-0 and brilliant for Beram

We were missing good players tonight, we were playing with half fit players, tonight was a battle with ourselves on the park as much as it was against Ajax, so we must commend Celtic for our fighting ability tonight, we showed already we can mix it with the best, but here we are again, another home win in the Champions League, we didn’t deserve to lose against Milan, we didn’t deserve to lose against Barcelona, so tonight we take the 2 pieces of luck we got for our goals

We got Nir Biton sent off on the 87th minute, a straight red and I think Celtic will be successful in appealing this one. This was never a red card, a yellow perhaps. So although unfair on a player trying to impress his Manger, team mates and us fans, I think UEFA will overturn this one. Ajax scored a consolation goal in the 93rd minute, we held out for 30 seconds

3 points in the bag, which is the only stat I am interested in tonight

My man of the match for Celtic: Virgil van Dijk

  1. Hi shaun

Back in the fold. Enjoyed your text commentary as back up to a sometimes over-exuberant CTV audio. I will watch the game in the morning to get a better idea of how we played but it sounded as though we coped quite well given all the adverse circumstances. I got the impression our biggest fault was our perennial inability to hold onto the ball and be certain of our passing. Personally, I think it is a major flaw in our domestic play too. Anyway, all best left till tomorrow and a new dawn.

    Nice to be back.

  2. Strange one Arthur as in Italy against AC Milan we held onto the ball, controlled the game, and kept the ball well in possession. I think it speaks volumes of where we are as a team just now. Brown, Commons, Matthews, Ledley (Not fit to start), Boerrigter and Mouyokolo all not able to play/Start. I think when fit all 6 will start or be very close. I really like Mouyokolo, I hope he can get fit and prove his worth. Anyway…
We played “ok” tonight, it was obvious we were missing so many BIG players, but our spirit was there and we fought well, both goals were lucky, but after AC and Barca, we were due a bit of luck. I think we really are now a good European side, we played average and beat one of the best sides in Europe, that is a brilliant sign,

Hope you are well Arthur, I truly hope your absence was nothing bad.
I always love your opinions and debate we have. Your honest, and that is something not everyone is. Glad you are back to debate with..
