Celtic – Why we should be delighted where we are as a club

We are in good hands
We are in good hands

So 3 in a row tied up and a few cups in that time also, not everyone is happy but I read a lot of “No competition here” so we can’t moan when we are put out in any cup. I think this season seems not as good as last as beating Barcelona 2-1 doesn’t come around every season

Last season we won the double and had some superb memories from European cometition. I think a reality check is needed by many of us, probably me included to be fair. We can’t use this “Young Team” excuse, yeah the same one Rangers do even though on average so far this season has been age 27

But I hate talking about other teams I want to talk about the champions. This season put out of the League cup at home to Morton then the Scottish by Aberdeen then weeks later losing our unbeaten and clean sheet record in the same night up in Aberdeen

Yeah, things are looking ok
Yeah, things are looking ok

But look at how consistant we have been this season and while we did that we lost players, good players, Ledley and 2 players I don’t seem to see play much Wanyama and Hooper. I think any Celtic player right now looking for a quick exit to the English premiership should take note on what happens to most players when they leave Celtic, yup, all downhill. You can’t tell me players like Hooper don’t sit on the Norwich bench and think “I could be playing every week, winning medles and playing European football

This season was an adventure, looking back to the first game in the Champions league away to AC Milan I was commentating and at the time, say midway through the 2nd half I had penned the headline “Unlucky Celtic draw in Milan” so to lose late goals was horrible to take. But be real, we had players not used to that level and on the night we held our own, we missed one thing, a good striker, Balde and Pukki were not the answer

Is Leigh Griffiths that player? Well that is guesswork, nobody can sit here now and say yes or no, he scored goals at the same or higher level of English football after all, so lets see. I think Lenny will offload Balde, we will lose Sammy and Fisher I don’t think will re-sign. Will we lose Forster? I guess it depends on the Word Cup, if he gets called up he may feel he is good enough where he is. Will we lose Van Dijk, I think it would take £15M to see him go now, the kid signed a 3 year deal so we may have to sell next summer unless we tie him down to a new contract. Commons has another year we can take and I think Lenny will add 2 years at least too that and keep him for another 4 or so, he can play on for many years

New players that have done well, Van Dijk, Johansen and Biton are three I love, Griffiths has done more or less what many expected he would, but lets give Celtic’s coaching some credit, look what we did to Wanyama who was signed as a “Project” but an early injury to Kayal and Wanyama never looked back.  This season we didn’t see much of James Forest or Derk Boerrigter and others have been hampered with injury like Kayal, Matthews and Lustig. I think once we get everyone fit and add to it the thunder will return

This can only get better
This can only get better

Looking at what we lost, I think we 90% replaced. Van Dijk IS better than Kelvin Wilson was, I believe Biton and Johansen are both better than Ledley with the jury is still out on Griffiths

All I know is, I am looking forward to next season already and looking forward to see how the side looks come Champions League time. Lets look forward and believe we can get better again. Lenny is still learning also,  but as many of the World Managers will tell you, “I still learn” and this is from the very best, so why not Lenny?

He brought it!
He promised Thunder…..

And he brought it!
And he brought it!

Enjoy what we have, its what we have

  1. Hi shaun

I think I inadvertently gave my response in my comment to your previous post. I am not so sure I would use the word “delighted” as this would imply the club is meeting all my expectations and dreams. I am being facetious. I know perfectly well what you mean as you have clearly explained as your article goes on.

I agree that overall we have ACHIEVED, probably more than would be expected from a club picking up financial scraps, keeping strictly to good honest business methods of growth and development and providing enormous support and financial assistance to innumerable external causes. Such an ethical approach to the sport called football may be like carrying a shotgun with the safety catch off. It may bring us limited success on the wider stage and, perhaps, may even restrict our domestic accomplishments. But what it unequivocally provides season on season is achievement WITH HONOUR. That is why I have always been Celtic. That is why I am Celtic. That is why I will always be Celtic. That is why I am proud to be Celtic. That is why I love Celtic. There is no greater achievement no matter how little or how great than to provide honourably for those who support you.

  2. Hi mate…
I think we must define “expectations and dreams” based on the current climate. Be we like it or not No “Them” in the league has lost the whole game up here money. I will say this “Collapse” has not happened, Dundee United and Killie are both debt free, Scotland 17’s got to the Euro Championships, the national side is doing a LOT better. So the set-up here is good but I think we are too big for this league. Players won’t come here just now. But 100% when “They” are back in the league, should they make it past the next Administration, I think better players will again come to the club.

And same, love the club, it’s my passion and life. But we must be real. We should have won more trophies but competition is a good thing. We are in a position now where we can only get stronger and dominate the game here more and harder. This blog was more about where we are and where it could take us in the future. If last season was a glimpse of where we are going, I think we are happy

Thanks for your honest comment Arthur and hope you had a good weekend mate
