So the great Sevco master plan was to buy premier league players in who would normally go to St Johnston,Hearts or Hibs and combine them with the dregs that stayed at Ibrox and pay these guys arround £7k a week. Add that to a highly paid premier league coaching staff and they would stroll to the 3rd division title. Smacks of total arrogance and most importantly lack of research into the lower tiers of Scottish football.
Now I’m enjoying the circus that is sevco as much as any Celtic fans but if they had taken a more measured and less arrogant stand they could have strolled the 3rd division.
Now I don’t run this club but this is what I would have done.
- Sacked the entire backroom staff
- Approached Ross county with a view to buying their management team and offere them better wages than they are on plus bonus on promotion
- Asked the manager to scour the lower divisions for ‘scrappers’ basically guys who are decent players but know what it’s like to play on the type of playing surfaces you encounter in the lower divisions. Preferably guys who have won 2nd/3rd div
Unfortunately for sevco fans Green felt needed Ally McCoist to get the angry bears on side. However I unlike Fergus Green does not have a plan for hanging around at Ibrox, he’ll take his cash and run leaving them in debt.
Obviously I don’t care what happens to them but I think the approach I have highlighted would have been a guaranteed success to make it back to the SPL in three years whilst keeping costs down.
But as I said in the title Arrogance will bite you in the backside.
