Celtic destroy Kilmarnock to remain unbeaten

Ledley made it 1-0

Midweek game and a decent crowd and a good side put out, first half was just all Celtic, should have had a penalty early on when Commons was pulled in the box, the passing tonight has been superb. Many have a go but you can only beat who is in front of you. Celtic in the first half were totally superb.

Celtic took the lead on 15 minutes Patient play by Celtic was rewarded when Joe Ledley side-foots James Forrest’s perfectly weighted ball past Craig Samson for his fifth goal of the season. Brilliant goal by a player who we all want to stay and looks happy to stay. Hope so he does well. With Biton and Stefan Johansen there we have a really good centre midfield. Still need a left back or someone like Adam Matthews who can play defence or midfield.

Killie player is gutted as Forrest gets a ‘well done’

The second goal came after superb play from James Forest, he smashed a superb low cross into the box, perfect cross where it cause havoc and was turned in by Kilmarnock player Lee Ashcroft, own goal and 2-0 Celtic. We had a few more chances, Virgil Van Dijk came close from long range and Scott Brown was close from 20 yards. All in a brilliant half, superb play we had the ball the whole game so far.

Half time: Celtic 2-0 Kilmarnock

Kilmarnock started the 2nd half well, Celtic never started too well a brilliant chance came their way 5 minutes into the half and there was Forster to save well and keep his 900+ minutes clean sheet safe.

Celtic came back into it and got the passing going again, Commons had a shot, Izzy and Mulgrew started to make an impact and getting good crosses into the box. Brilliant header by Izzy to keep the ball in play to Commons, superb cross to the back post and Pukki should have done better with the header but at least he was in a good position to score, got to look for the positives. He needed another goal tonight for his confidence.

Mulgrew slides in number 3

Brilliant play midway through the half, Forrest and Brown with good play superb pass/cross into the box by Forrest a good shot by Mulgrew off the post and right into the goalkeepers arms, so unlucky. Mulgrew made it 3-0 and 3 points from the superb Joe Ledley, Mulgrew took a brilliant touch and slotted the ball into the far post. At this stage Celtic were in full flow and a delight to watch.

Pukki nearly made it 4-0 when Scott Brown played in Pukki he went near post and a brilliant save and very unlucky for Pukki who was instantly replaced by Balde on 71 minutes. Celtic kept going with brilliant ball retention and wide play with a lot of the play coming down our left hand side. Ledley was superb tonight playing superb passes the whole game. A corner went right across goal, Forrest had superb shot right at the keeper, Celtic were amazing at this stage, utter control.

Derk Boerrigter came on with just over 10 minutes to go for Forrest who had a superb game a constant threat throughout the game and looking more like himself.  Commons nearly got his 22nd of the season and Celtic’s 4th when Mulgrew played him in but his dinked shot went just wide. Brilliant passing throughout by Ledley and Mulgrew. Balde was through with 10 minutes to go but couldn’t get his shot away. Unlucky

With 10 minutes to go new signing Stefan Johansen came on for Mulgrew. 5 minutes to go Van Dijk was sent through by a superb Ledley pass he shot near post and it went wide. Celtic were creating chance after chance here. How it was only 3-0 with 5 minutes to go is a mystery, really should have been about 5 nil easy. Another good move seen Izzy play Ledley in and his show went over the bar. 4-0 when Balde was sent in by Commons, he turned his man the show was not the best but the keeper dropped it and ANOTHER goal coming off the bench for Balde. Lucky goal.

Balde gets the 4th, lucky bhoy

Man of the match : Joe Ledley, hard to pick a man of the match, but I give it to Joe

Fraser Forster has gone 1000 minutes without conceding a league goal. Superb from him and the Defence!

  1. Thanks for the report Shaun. It looks like we are beginning to get results that actually reflect the gap between other clubs and ourselves. It is great to know it is happening without Armageddon over the horizon. There is an interesting battle developing for the other reward places and that is creating a fresh competitiveness and attracting increased support. So, not in spite of but rather because of Celtic dominance, the Scottish game at the top level is seeing something of a revival. Even though the majority have taken a defensive stance against us, no change from seasons gone by except there was another team in the equation, there have been a few clubs willing to have a go this season. The recent Hibs game highlighted a less financially secure club producing a team that gave us a good run for our money. Such clubs will be less and less discouraged by the financial chasm and I am confident that in the next few years there will be clubs knocking at our door for the top honours.

Grateful for the report as always. There was some excellent play on Wednesday night and Big Fraser made his now compulsory dramatic intervention. That Commons is a waste of space. A full ninety minutes without a goal. What is Lenny thinking :)?
